The collection contains the personal and business correspondence, memoranda, clippings, scrapbooks, photo albums, and letterpress books pertaining to the life and managerial career of T.R. Johns. Items contained therein document Johns' administration of Bethlehem Steel's affiliated mines and labor conditions in Pennsylvania and West Virginia mines. Principal correspondents include notable steel executives Charles Schwab and Eugene Grace, state and federal mine bureau officials, politicians, and members of professional mine engineering societies. The collection highlights Bethlehem Steel's extensive political and economic control in Johnstown, and control over the mining communities it administered. In addition to Johns' personal papers, the collection contains 563 photographs (bound and unbound) of company towns, collieries and mines, and Johns' family and relatives.

Charles M. Schwab was born on April 18, 1862, in Williamsburg, Pa., and grew up in Loretto, Pa. In 1879, he began working for the Carnegie Co. as a stake-driver in engineering corps of Edgar Thompson Steel Works and Furnaces in Braddock, Pa. This plant formed part of Carnegie Brothers & Co., Limited. The Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, formed in Pennsylvania during the 1840's moved to a West Seneca, N.Y. site in 1899. Steelmaking began in 1903 and by 1909 the City of Lackawanna had been established around the steel plant. Purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1922, the facility expanded until employment reached over 20,000 in the mid - 1950's. Decline in the 1970's led to the closing of the Lackawanna Plant in 1983.
